The nature of mankind

The relationship between men and nature has always served as raw material to arts. After all, thinking about it is what situates our race in the world. So, given the extremely fast-paced changes of things nowadays, this antique question is still very current – and gives a lot to think about when it comes to art.

On the work she calls Contemporary Mythology, American artist Caitlin Hackett brings that question into life, and in the most literal sense. With mythical creatures that are a mixture between animals and men, she stimulates a series of thoughts about the thin line that separates us from other species, and proposes reflections about our interference in the natural world, both ecological and genetic.

However, instead of answering to the questions about our place on Earth, Hackett proposes other ones. “Are we, human beings, still a part of nature? If so, does that make all that we have created, cities, vehicles, factories, all technology, part of nature as well? As we are able to remove ourselves from our own physical bodies and to come to experience life through the metaphysical, the digital, and the psychic, how will this distance from the physical experience of the world affect our relationship with nature?”
