Painting over spitted gum

Even though spitting your chewing gum on the streets is a reprehensible act, some people make good use of this disgusting practice. Well, at least in London.

If the common sense tells us to keep our feet away from these sticky marks on the ground, Ben Wilson does quite the opposite: he touches and manipulates them. It’s been six years now that the artist is engaged in the task of creating small artworks over the gum he finds on the streets, having created over 8 thousand works.

First he finds a piece of gum that has little moisture left inside. Then he heats it up with a burner and lacquers it, creating a suitable surface for acrylic paint. Despite their small size, one work can take a whole day to be completed.

It’s funny to imagine whether this kind of work discourages people from leaving gum on the streets or encourages them to do it even more often, in order to provide the artist with new canvases.
